The switch in emphasis from procedures to processes in the 2000 version of the ISO 9000 standards has resulted in a lot of talk about the 'process approach'.

Along with the talk, a certain amount of action has been taken (much of it not very productive) and an air of mystery and misunderstanding has developed around the concept of 'processes'.

The purpose of this workshop is to investigate, by bringing together a variety of companies to share information, just what it means to view the business in terms of its processes and the practical benefits that can be gained from that viewpoint.

The process approach is actually simple to understand and although it requires a different way of looking at the business, it's not so difficult to implement effectively. After all, who understands how your business works better than you and your colleagues?

We will draw not only from the guidance of the ISO 9000 standards but also from other models as appropriate, including Balanced Scorecard, Process Classification Framework and EFQM Excellence Model.

Participants will be asked, via a pre-workshop questionnaire to identify their specific areas of interest or concern, but topics likely to be covered include:
  • the important differences between a procedure and a process, and a process and a function

  • examples of top-level processes from a variety of businesses

  • the elements of a complete process description

  • how the process description relates to the management of the business

  • measures of outcomes and measures of performance

  • importance of engaging the people who do the work in process improvement.
The workshop will be of interest and value not only to Quality Managers but also to others involved in process management or business improvement.

The majority of the day will comprise open group discussion but there will be brief inputs from a few speakers including Rob Baker, European Operations Director of the Bevington Group, and Chris Ellins, a former Director of the Kaizen Institute.
